- In adults, earache may sometimes be associated with an upper respiratory
tract infection and, as long as the pain is not severe, can be treated with oral
analgesics for up to 48 hours, before referral if the condition does not improve.
- Earache in children should always be referred, as otitis media (infection of
the middle ear) is fairly common and repeated attacks can lead to permanent
damage if not managed properly.
Use of an oral analgesic can be advised until a doctor can be seen.
- Barotrauma: some people suffer severe ear pain when flying.
Treatment
Oral analgesics
Ear drops containing choline salicylate, which has an analgesic and antiinflammatory effect, are available without prescription but they are not generally recommended.
